Melanotan 2 (MT-2) is a synthetic peptide analog of the naturally occurring hormone alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It is primarily used for its ability to stimulate melanogenesis, the production of melanin in the skin, which can result in tanning of the skin.
MT-2 works by binding to melanocortin receptors in the skin, particularly the MC1R receptor, which triggers a series of biological processes leading to increased production of melanin. This increased melanin production causes the skin to darken, resulting in a tan-like appearance.
Originally developed as a potential treatment for skin conditions such as erythropoietic protoporphyria and vitiligo, MT-2 has also gained popularity as a tanning agent in the form of injections or nasal sprays.

Melanotan 2
Melanotan 2 is a synthetic peptide, a chain of amino acids, originally developed for medical purposes. It is an analogue of the natural hormone α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), which plays a role in skin pigmentation. The peptide has become best known as a popular way to achieve a tan.
The origins of Melanotan 2
Melanotan 2 was initially investigated as a potential treatment for people with certain skin conditions, such as erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare disease that causes extreme sensitivity to sunlight. By stimulating the production of melanin, Melanotan 2 could protect the skin from harmful UV rays.
Popularity as a cosmetic product
Despite its original medical focus, Melanotan 2 has developed into a popular cosmetic product, especially in the fitness and beauty industry. Many people are interested in the peptide because of its ability to achieve a tan without prolonged sun exposure, which increases the risk of skin aging and an increased risk of skin cancer. The quick tan that Melanotan 2 offers is an alternative to tanning beds and self-tanners.
How does Melanotan 2 affect the skin?
Melanin is a pigment responsible for the color of our skin, hair and eyes. It is produced by cells called melanocytes. When the skin is exposed to UV radiation, melanocytes are stimulated to produce more melanin, making the skin darker. This is a natural protective mechanism against harmful UV rays.
Melanotan 2 works by binding to melanocortin receptors in the skin. These receptors are the same receptors that are activated by natural α-MSH when the skin is exposed to UV radiation. By binding to these receptors, Melanotan 2 mimics the effects of UV radiation and stimulates the production of melanin. This means that the skin tans without the need for actual sunlight.
Impact on skin types and color variations
The effectiveness of Melanotan 2 may vary depending on individual skin type and genetic predisposition. People with lighter skin types will generally experience a more pronounced difference in pigmentation than those with darker skin types. In addition, factors such as dosage, method of administration and overall skin health can also affect results.
How long does the effect of Melanotan 2 last?
The duration of the effect of Melanotan 2 can vary greatly from person to person and depends on several factors. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, as the effect is influenced by the dosage, skin type and how quickly the body breaks down the drug.
1. Dosage
The amount of Melanotan 2 you use plays an important role in how long the effect remains visible. Higher doses can lead to a longer tanning effect, as the body produces more melanin and stays at elevated levels for longer. However, higher doses also increase the risk of side effects, making it important to use dosage carefully and tailor it to personal goals and skin type.
2. Skin type
Skin type has a major impact on the duration and intensity of tanning achieved with Melanotan 2. People with light skin (skin type I or II) often have more difficulty maintaining a long-lasting tan because their skin naturally contains less melanin. In contrast, people with darker skin (skin types III and above) can usually maintain a longer-lasting and deeper tan due to the higher natural concentration of melanin in their skin.
3. Metabolism
The rate at which your body breaks down Melanotan 2 also plays a role in how long the effect lasts. Individuals with a fast metabolism may find that the effects fade more quickly, while those with a slower metabolism retain the tan longer. This is because a faster metabolism removes the substances in Melanotan 2 from the body more quickly, causing the concentration in the bloodstream to decrease more quickly.
Always consult a doctor before considering using a product such as Melanotan 2.
